Is there a reason some girls are selected for nyssma all state women's choir and some for mixed choir?
I just got my letter inviting me to participate in the nyssma all state women's choir. Two of my friends also got letters but they are in mixed choir... I was wondering how they decide which group you perform with.
I taught vocal music in NY since 1971, and am a NYSSMA judge. I am *not* on the vocal selection committee. When someone has been in AS before, then they are assigned to the *other* group the second time they make AS. However, the first time, when the list is made for each voice part ( let's say we need 50 tenors, 100 altos, etc.) then we go thru the women's lists A/B - one for Women's, one for Mixed. It has nothing at all to do with your score. Woodwind, brass, and percussion also have distribution among the band, wind ensemble, and orchestra. Strings can go to string orchestra or full orchestra. The only people who can KNOW where they are going is singing men - they are in Mixed Choir. All the jazz stuff is a whole other thing - it is a separate audition, as you know. Sometimes singers think that trying out for a jazz group would be *fun* - until they see that you need REAL jazz technique and skills!
So - congrats BIGTIME on making this groups - and share my best wishes with your friends! You will have a great time and learn a lot - too bad it will be FREEZING with horizontal snow the whole time you are there!!!!!
