Dreams Comes
Where does the illumination for dreams come from?

How are we able to see in dreams (bearing in mind that it's dark at night and we have our eyes closed)? If the illumination comes from our 'imagination', why can't we use our imagination in waking life to illuminate dark rooms, thus saving on light-bulbs?

well to answer your first part, we don't use the actually receptor (eye) the rods and cones in the back of the eye detect light and send electrical signals to our Image part of the brain, the Image part of logic centre then decrypts the electrical signals and then processes it (e.g. if it sees a truck coming at you the logic centre will know that you and the truck are physical matter and that if you collide it will cause pain which is bad, so the logic centre releases electrical signals to the muscles to make you move out of the way)
however pictures in dreams are not spawned by signals from the eye (as they are closed) but during sleep the brain has the most electrical activity compared to any time during the day, the brain becomes a super-computer doing many calculations a second (this is why scientists are trying to test if humans can do advanced maths during their sleep by hooking subject's brains up to a computer and feeding it electrical signals and seeing if the brain reacts to it.) during sleep parts of the brain are awakened and some parts are connected together. the synapse's (electrical junctions) in the brain allow more signals to pass into another synapse thus giving a chain reaction. also during sleep the logic centre part of the brain becomes almost dormant; it has less activity that during the day( this is why dreams seem weird and illogical) so think about it; parts of the brain are linked together now that you are asleep (such as Imagination and sight) with the logic centre shut down, your imagination centre (and sometimes your memory centre) can link with the sight centre of the brain, this gives the illusion of seeing, when actually you are re-living a memory or living a figure of your own imagination. the logic centre is practical asleep so it doesn't think " my eyes are close but i can see things, something is wrong; wake up!" so your seeing centre just decrypts the electrical signals and shows you them. sometimes you may have some logic in dreams, you still know that if a truck is coming at you in your dream then you should run, but it is so dormant that it gets confused as some parts of the logic Centre is asleep (think of a computer with some corrupt files; it can understand some of the files, but when one file says "look at file33" and file 33 is broken or asleep, then it can only understand the original file" so the logic centre may think that the truck is danger but when it gives that information to the part of the centre which makes muscles move, nothing happens, this is because the muscle movement part of the centre is dormant so that's why you don't run in your bed when sleeping. some people who roll or talk when they sleep means that their logic centre is more active than usually. and some people who sleepwalk have a fairly active logic centre when they sleep, but the logic centre is not entirely awake, so it may think its in a dream because parts of the centre are not awake to tell you that this is real life.

2nd part of that question: well we cant illuminate a room with Imagination, you cant do that with anything other than actually photons of light. but i see where you are coming from. if your mind can take a snap-shot Image of the room when it is light, then when it is dark you recall that Image to the seeing centre of the brain (so not using your eyes to see, you use your memory to see) then you could see that room when it is light, even though it is dark, but you are not seeing the room, you are just looking at your memory of that room. but lets say someone left a book in that room after you took a snap-shot of that room, when you recall the memory of that room, the book wont be there as the book was placed there after you last saw the room. also, the brains memory cant remember something like a room with such detail, you may be able to remember where object are such as a chair or window, but you wont be able to remember things like the pattern on the carpet, you may have a rough guess but you can not remember things like that. so really we would be living in the past every time we see that room when it was dark.

FUN FACT: every thing you see right now is history! lets say you are looking at a book. the photons of light bounce off of the book and into your eyes, this takes fractions of a second, then the eyes absorb the light and sends electrical signals to the brain, the brain processes this information. all of this happens in fractions of a second, but by the time your brain has processed the information, it has already happened fractions of a second ago, we are all living in the past! only by a few micro-seconds though.

hope i wasn't too confusing and may fast typing didn't cause too many miss-spelt words!

i got most of this information from TV programmes i have watched and a little bit if information from school. can you be live i am only 16, i have actually surprised myself, i didn't know i knew this much info lol.

again, i hope
