About housing benefit, How do they work it out?
I am currently working 16 hours a week at a rate of 5.99 per hour. I also claim Housing Benefit. HB currently pays some of my rent plus a reduction on Council Tax. The problem is in my current posistion there is just not enough money to support my outgoings. I have decided that I need to work more hours. How many hours could I add without any change to the amount of HB & CT Benefit I receive. How do they work it out?
Any change increase or decrease to your income will affect your council/housing benefit.
Basically the council give you a figure on how much rent they will pay depending on your circumstances, where i live they will pay £60.50 a week in rent to any single person or couple with no children. This figure is the MAXIMUM the coucnil will pay towards housing benefit in a week. They then deduct 60% of any income you earn over this figure off the maximum they will pay. So say your income was £100 a week, they would use £39.50 as extra income. 60% will then be deducted from your benefit, which is £23.70. So with a maximum weekly figure of £60.50, minus your extra income of £23.70 they will pay £36.80 a week to you as housing benefit. The same principal works for council tax benefit also. So if you rent was £75 a week, they would only pay £36.80 you would have to find the rest. Even if your income only went up by £20 a week, you'd lose about £12 of housing benefit so to be honest you wouldn't be that much better off. If your considering working more hours, you need to make sure it will eb enough to cover the whole amount of your rent, otherwise you will be no better off then you are now.
