P Reg Ford Escort 1800 16v zetec acceleration Problems when cold.?
Hi there. I have recently encountered a problem with my Escorts acceleration while the engine is still cold. It starts and sets off fine but as soon as the revs hit 2.5 - 3k the power seems to just disapear and the whole car judders. Its fine around town at 20 -30 miles an hour if i dont need to nip out of a junction in a rush. Motorway driving is even worse i cant get over 50mph if i carry on trying to accelerate the car appears to lose all power again and shakes the car violently from back to front. I have noticed though that ones my engine water temp sensor reads normal this stops and appears to drive normally the majority of the time. I had a recent idling problem and cleaned the idle control valve and it appears that only since i have done this i have the problem.
I assumed that it was to do with the valve so this morning i replaced it. But absolutely nothing has changed apart from my idle is back to normal. Please Help
your best place to start is to change the plugs, pay special attention to the the leads for signs of arcing also look for a carbon trace line down the side of the plug, it may also be worth changing the oil as these early zetecs would suffer from miss fire if the incorrect oil grade was used, as this would cause the hydraulic lifters to give minimal lift resulting in low/poor compresion
